BREAKING CHAINS

Cruz sat on the couch in the living room, the lively music from the celebration of their recent victory thumping in the background. A drink clutched in his hand, he gazed ahead, lost in thought. His body ached from the relentless effort he had put into his performance, but no one seemed to care—no one except Mia, who had always been the one to check on him.

"Hey, Cruz! When are you planning to stop being Lisa's doormat?" The voice of his cousin broke through his moment of peace. Cruz’s mood shifted instantly, irritation sparking within him.

"Fuck off! I'm not anyone’s doormat!" He snapped back, frustration bubbling to the surface. He didn’t want to hear his cousin’s nonsense about Lisa. A chuckle echoed from his cousin as he walked away, leaving Cruz alone with his thoughts.

Mia's brother, Alex, plopped down beside him on the couch, tipsy and holding a drink. Cruz turned to Alex, brow furrowing with curiosity. "Hey, Alex, have you seen Mia anywhere?"

“Oh, Mia? She has an important race today! You know how she gets when it comes to racing—it's like you with hockey!” Cruz chuckled, appreciating how fiercely passionate Mia was about her sport, just as he was about his.

“Listen, Cruz, I know everyone is making fun of you for staying with Lisa, but as your best friend who has watched you get used like a piece of trash, you need to break up with her!” Alex's tone turned serious. “You can't keep letting her get away with her cheating!”

“What, and then what am I supposed to do? Lisa’s the cheer squad captain!" Cruz shot back, dismissing the idea.

“So? She’s still a whore to everyone else. I just want you to be happy! Staying with Lisa isn't going to make you happy, no matter how much you convince yourself she can change. She’s probably in the bathroom with some guy right now!” Alex looked at Cruz with genuine concern, hoping he’d finally see the truth.

For a moment, Cruz remained silent, contemplating Alex's words. A heavy sigh escaped his lips as he nodded slowly. “Yeah, you’re right. I can’t keep letting this slide and letting her humiliate me like this.”

“Good! Trust me, you’ll be happier!” Alex patted Cruz's shoulder, relief evident on his face. He watched Cruz closely, wanting to believe this time would be different.

The Next Day at the University

Cruz stood in the hallway, his heart racing as he faced Lisa, who was shouting furiously at him for breaking up with her. She hurled curses and insults, but he was used to it by now. What he wasn’t prepared for was when she crossed the line by dragging Mia into their argument.

With a surge of rage, Cruz firmly grabbed Lisa by the throat and smashed her against the wall. “Don’t you dare drag Mia into this! You lost that right the moment you started sleeping with other guys. News flash: I’m not your doormat!”

His voice was low but seething with anger as he leaned closer, making sure she understood. “If you mention Mia again, we’re going to have serious problems.” He locked eyes with her, his resolve unshakeable. The crowd of students around them gasped, watching the confrontation unfold, but Cruz didn’t care. He needed to protect Mia from Lisa’s toxicity.

Lisa was left speechless, unable to muster a response. Cruz released her, walking away with his mood considerably darkened, especially after Lisa had the audacity to call Mia fat. It was beyond ridiculous.

Cruz POV:

Fucking Lisa, how dare she call Mia fat? Mia isn’t fat—she’s curvy, and it’s undeniably sexy. I know I shouldn’t be thinking that way about Mia since she’s my best friend’s little sister, but I’ve always found her attractive.

To be honest, I was disappointed Mia hadn’t shown up to the game or the party. I understood how serious she took her racing, yet it felt like something was missing without her support. I always played better when she was there, cheering me on.

As I walked past the classrooms, I caught sight of Mia in her seat, listening to the lecture. She looked bored, maybe even tired, and I couldn’t help but chuckle at her expression. I continued on, making my way toward the locker room where my teammates awaited me.

The moment I stepped inside, they bombarded me with questions about the breakup. Every inquiry felt like a wave of relief washing over them. When Alex asked, “So, how did Lisa react to you finally dumping her?” I smirked. “I’m sure you’ll hear all about it from her or find some post online!” Laughter erupted around the room, and I felt lighter.

“Alright, let’s change and hit the ice!” Alex said, shaking his head at the groans from the others. We were all tired from the game, but that didn’t mean we could stop practicing.
